OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS: WE GET CONCRETE, MEASURABLE RESULTS!
Boston Learning Center has been featured in The Boston Globe, The Improper Bostonian, and The Catalogue for Philanthropy. BLC was also one of only six charities hand-picked by the Social Innovation Forum in 2004 for our innovative, results-oriented approach. Further, in March 2005, BLC received Honorable Mention for the Teen Best Practice Award for Skill Development presented by The Boston Foundation and Boston’s After-School for All Partnership. BLC is also the 2007 recipient of the Unsung Community Hero Award presented by Jack and Jill of America. The BLC Executive Director, Ayele Shakur, is the 2007 recipient of the Great Friend to Kids Award presented by the Boston Children’s Museum.
TUTORING PROGRAM OUTCOMES
During the 2007-2008 school year, 378 students throughout Massachusetts completed Boston Learning Center's SES tutoring program. The results were as follows:
- 86% of our students improved in reading, based on the Basic Achievement Skills Inventory (BASI). Average improvement was 1.8 grade levels after 30 hours of instruction.
- 77% of our students improved in math, based on the Basic Achievement Skills Inventory (BASI). Average improvement was 2.2 grade levels after 30 hours of instruction.
- 96% of respondents on our Parent Evaluation Surveys rate the quality of the tutoring services that their child received as either "Good" or "Excellent."
BIFF OUTCOMES
The BIFF Paradigm Project is proving to be a successful urban school reform initiative. BIFF has worked with more than 1,000 at-risk teenagers since its inception in 1999. Seventy-eight percent of the students who complete the program show measurable, academic improvement by changing their attitudes about school and increasing their grades in English, Math, Science, History, and Foreign Language, within a year. For most students, BIFF is not just a quick fix but a permanent, life-changing experience. Students who graduated from BIFF three or four years ago are still on the Honor Roll and continuing to excel.
SHORT TERM RESULTS
- 83% of parents and teachers surveyed indicate improved student attitudes about school and schoolwork
- 81% of students surveyed report feeling an increased motivation to excel in school
- 78% of BIFF alumni increase their homework completion rate to 80% or higher
LONG TERM RESULTS
- 100% of BIFF 10th grade alumni passed the 2006 and 2007 MCAS in English and Math
- 78% of BIFF alumni have improved their grades across subjects Of the BIFF alumni who were previously D & F students
- 53% have gone from D’s and F’s to A’s and B’s in at least one core subject
- 45% have improved by one full average grade (i.e. from D to C)
- 25% have gone from failing to the Honor Roll or have achieved Honorable Mention
GIRLS CONNECTION PROGRAM OUTCOMES
50 girls completed the program during the 2008-2009 school year. Results were as follows:
- 91% of our girls and 96% of our parents expressed satisfaction with the Girls Connection Program.
- 79% of our girls improved their report card grades in English and math.
- 93% of our girls reported having more positive social interactions with other teen girls.
- 79% of our girls improved their test scores on the diagnostic pre- and post- Wide Range Achievement Test for reading and math. On average, students improved by 0.7 grade levels in English/Language Arts and by 0.8 grade levels in math.
